Back in June, during the illegal DIY fireworks heyday, explosions in the middle of the night meant it was just another Thursday. But on August 27th, plenty of New Yorkers were shocked by the sudden roars just before 11 p.m.

After all, the fireworks arrived three hours after the NYC Office of Emergency Management said they would go on:

The rain pushed the fireworks back to later in the evening. Some people enjoyed them:

And they did look impressive:

The Post reports that the fireworks were for a pre-taped segment for the MTV Video Music Awards, which are on Sunday, August 30th. The show was originally supposed to have been broadcast from the Barclays Center, but now the show will feature performances—Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, BTS, Doja Cat, The Weeknd, and DaBaby are among the stars—from locations across the city. MTV even got an exemption for its stars to skip New York's quarantine for visitors from hot zone states.

MTV has not yet responded to our request for comment.
