Guitar Heroes: Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York
Now through July 4, 2011, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Featuring the extraordinary guitars of New York master craftsmen John D’Angelico, James D’Aquisto, and John Monteleone, this unprecedented exhibition explores their roots in a long tradition of stringed-instrument making that has thrived for more than 400 years and that was first brought to New York from Italy around the turn of the 20th century.
Some of the most influential guitarists of the last century—Chet Atkins, Les Paul, George Benson, Paul Simon, Steve Miller, Mark Knopfler, Jim Hall, and Grant Green, among others—have owned many of the guitars created by the three modern-day masters now on view.
Hand-carved works by D’Angelico, D’Aquisto, and Monteleone are presented against the backdrop of earlier masterpieces of Italian and Italian-American instrument construction, including The Rawlins, one of four known surviving guitars made by the famous violinmaker Antonio Stradivari.
