Saturday Night Live's latest episode was delightfully weird at times, featuring first-time host Regé-Jean Page and musical guest Bad Bunny (who turned up in some sketches, as well). While the highlights were in the music-driven sketches, pretty sure this episode also brought us the first time Governor Andrew Cuomo was portrayed on the show during the pandemic (and possibly ever) — we'll see if this puts an end to their live audience shows.
The Cold Open featured Britney Spears (Chloe Fineman) hosting her talk show "Oops You Did It Again," which saw Ted Cruz (Aidy Bryant), Governor Andrew Cuomo (Pete Davidson) and Gina Carano (Cecily Strong) stop by to apologize. This wasn't the only time Cuomo's nursing home scandal was addressed during the episode, but it is the only time the writers captured the governor's relationship with Mayor Bill de Blasio so perfectly: "That bird bitch son of a.. what did that bird bitch say about me... I will bury him in the tallest grave this city has ever seen, I'll hire a hobo to Rick Moranis him so hard he'll think he's back in Universal Pre-K."
The Monologue had Regé-Jean Page mostly fending off the women of SNL who, like everyone else in the world, have been seduced by his character on Bridgerton.
Loco ft. Bad Bunny was a highlight of the night, featuring a woman (Ego Nwodim) who has lost her goddamn mind as she hits that pandemic wall we're all very familiar with at this point. I'll be performing this in my apartment alongside my plants later this afternoon.
Actor's Spotlight TV host (Ego Nwodim) welcomes Kingsley Ben-Adir (Regé-Jean Page), Daniel Kaluuya (Chris Redd) and Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson).
In the Job Interview, a man (Regé-Jean Page) shows his portfolio in an attempt to land an advertising job, ultimately winning the boss (Beck Bennett) over with a "mic drop" idea.
Weekend Update with Michael Che and Colin Jost took on Cruz and Cuomo ("who looks like all three Goodfellas at once"), and featured Pete Davidson delivering some solid jokes as himself, and Jessie Raunch (Heidi Gardner) attempting to discuss food insecurity and her mutual aid organization.
Sea Shanty was a nod to the TikTok trend (which I cannot further elaborate on because I'm good with just Twitter and Instagram, thank you). The sketch features an aspiring sailor (Andrew Dismukes) who is questioning joining a whaling crew (Regé-Jean Paul, Bad Bunny, Kenan Thompson, Kyle Mooney, Kate McKinnon, Chris Redd, Bowen Yang, Beck Bennett Alex Moffat Mikey Day) after hearing their sea shanties.
The Grocery Rap brings together a trio (Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, Andrew Dismukes) just trying to go viral by making a rap in a grocery store without masks on during a pandemic.
Let's Say Grace features two families (Regé-Jean Page, Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant, Beck Bennett, Heidi Gardner, Chris Redd, Ego Nwodim, Andrew Dismukes, Punkie Johnson) one-upping each other on saying grace.
Drivers License was another highlight, featuring some guys playing pool in a bar (Regé-Jean Page, Kenan Thompson, Beck Bennett, Pete Davidson, Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Bowen Yang) while bonding over the song "Drivers License" by Olivia Rodrigo and offering at-times reductive commentary on some beloved female songwriters.
We weren't getting through this without a Bridgerton sex sketch, and Bridgerton Intimacy Coordinator (featuring Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Regé-Jean Page and Chloe Fineman) did the trick.
Mr. Chicken Legs Pageant is hosted at the infamous Cecil Hotel (as seen on Netflix) and has men competing for the skinniest legs in America.
Bad Bunny performed "La Noche de Anoche" ft. Rosalía (Twitter has declared this one to be "steamy") and "Te Deseo lo Mejor."
Coming up next week, Nick Jonas x 2:
