We already knew the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus would be taking its act to the Meadowlands this spring, but now the circus also reports that they will not return to Coney Island this summer, citing "scheduling problems" and operating costs. Spokesman Stephen Payne told the Daily News, "We just couldn't make it work. We have so many tours moving around the country. There are a lot of moving parts." And while this may be good news for the city's animal activists, Coney Island merchants are worried about the consequences.
For better or worse, the circus has drawn 250,000 patrons to the area, boosting business on the boardwalk. Lola Starr Boutique owner Diana Carlin told the Post, “It’s a very sad loss because they brought a lot of color and energy to Coney Island." So do a lot of businesses.
City officials are reportedly looking for other entertainment options for the vacant lot this summer. But if you're itching to get your Ringling fix, the circus has signed a deal to bring at least 48 shows annually to the Barclays Center once it opens in 2012.
