Tonight, a supergroup of musicians will bring the soundtrack of the blockbuster video game Grand Theft Auto V to life as part of the New York Film Festival's Convergence section. The concert, Live From Los Santos: The Music Of Grand Theft Auto V, will feature Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, and Alchemist & Oh No performing with orchestral musicians at Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Manhattan. Yesterday, we got an exclusive look at the rehearsals.
In the below video you'll meet the musicians who composed and recorded the GTA V score through a process of sharing ideas and licks virtually—at times getting recordings from fellow acts, treating those as samples, and layering a new take.
The vibe at yesterday's rehearsals was upbeat and relaxed—many in the room were clearly excited about the opportunity to jam and play live with fellow musicians they regard as heroes.
Most of the love was for Tangerine Dream, whose founder Edgar Froese has been a legend on the electronic music scene out of Germany for over forty years. The Tangerine Dream posse arrived at Carroll Studios in Hell's Kitchen in a pair of giant black limousines. Froese videotapes everything, including our attempt to interview him. After saying what he liked about the game, we asked Edgar if he enjoys Grand Theft Auto V—"I am a very busy man... but one time I played it three times an hour."
