September 21st is many things: It is National New York Day, it is this author's birthday, it is also Bill Murray's birthday, it's the night that "love was changing the mind of pretenders while chasing the clouds away," and it is Batman Day. We're here to talk about the latter, as this year marks the 80th anniversary of Batman making his debut appearance for DC Comics. In celebration, New York City is getting a Bat-Signal (as are other cities, though we know that this is the true Gotham).
Here in NYC, the beacon will blast into the sky (or rather on to the side of the old Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg) starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and will stick around for 4 hours. (We'd love to see your photos: send them to [email protected]!)
"The Bat-Signal is easily one of the most recognizable images among all superhero iconography and this is going to be a remarkable sight as we transcend borders, languages and cultures to bring us all together with this single experience,” said Warner Bros. Pam Lifford. “We are proud to send up the Bat-Signal on Batman Day because it is an important beacon of inspiration that makes us all believe that it’s possible to take hardship and turn it into something good. Batman Day is a global celebration for all the fans.”
The signal will also be projected in Los Angeles, Rome, Paris, Barcelona, London, São Paulo, Montreal, Melbourne, Mexico City, Tokyo, Berlin, and Johannesburg. Hopefully this does not confuse Batman.
In 2017, the Bat-Signal lit up City Hall in Los Angeles, in honor of former Batman Adam West.
Here's a reminder that you can still watch Batman & Bill on Hulu, telling the story of Bill Finger, the New Yorker who created Batman.
And now, deep thoughts:
