As essential workers keep this city running, and healthcare workers are thrown on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic — battling a disease that isn't even fully understood in a hospital system that is quickly becoming overwhelmed, and often without the appropriate protective care — New Yorkers are doing what they can to show gratitude and support. Namely: staying at home to help flatten the curve before our hospitals become even more overwhelmed.

On Friday, March 27th, a #ClapBecauseWeCare initiative will launch with a two-minute clap that you can participate in from wherever you are in the city. It will be in celebration and appreciation of all essential workers. Here's the plan, per a release:

Following successful activations in Europe, we wanted to come together to clap and celebrate for all the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, grocery store workers, restaurant workers, truck drivers, sanitation workers, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and whoever else deserves a round of applause for their continued, essential work. To show our gratitude, we are asking people to join us on Friday, March 27th at 7pm EST for a two-minute round of applause from your front doors, stoops, windows, balconies, roofs, living rooms, gardens, etc. From wherever you may be at a safe social distance.

Get this right, New York City, and maybe next time we'll do Sabbath.

And don't forget to use the #ClapBecauseWeCare hashtag if you share videos.
