Brooklyn is about to have so many ice rinks! After a yearlong delay, Prospect Park will in December unveil the final stage of its $74 million Lakeside development, which will feature two brand new rinks—one outdoor, one covered—for year-round use, said Prospect Park Alliance spokesperson Paul Nelson. The rinks will replace the former Wollman Rink, which closed in 2010. In the summer, the covered rink will serve as a roller rink; the uncovered one will turn into a water playground.
Nelson said the Alliance has yet to choose an operator, meaning details like hours and admission are as yet unknown.
The Lakeside project is the park's first major renovation in 50 years. The first phase of the upgrade was revealed last October, and featured an entirely reconstructed lake shoreline, removal of invasive plants and addition of a new esplanade. “We had an opportunity to do something really great, and I think we have," Nelson said.
Not to be outdone, north Brooklyn will finally be treated to its long-awaited ice rink at McCarren Park pool, the Brooklyn Paper reports, after the rink's original operator, the Open Space Alliance, suddenly pulled out last year, citing financial woes. The Parks Department has since picked a new vendor, and will supposedly open for business sometime in December.
