I work for one of the city's oldest anti-poverty agencies-the Community Service Society of New York,CSSNY. Among my responsibilities is to coordinate the CSS Associates (a volunteer-based junior board made up of young professionals) and plan an annual benefit-cocktail party.
CSS's 160-year legacy of activism demonstrates responsiveness and innovation - we established the first men's homeless shelter, first child health clinics, first free lunch school program and the first model tenement. Our more recent accomplishments include uncovering an unemployment crisis among minority men and youth, which drew the attention of City Hall, and the creation of the largest health care ombuds program in the nation. Generations have supported CSS because we encourage New Yorkers to empower themselves through civic participation and volunteerism.
What do you love about your job?
Working for CSS, I meet New Yorkers who are not only passionate about the city, but also rally for a stronger community. My co-workers, CSS's supporters and volunteers - even the clients we've assisted through direct services - everyday I interact with people who I truly admire.
What is the goal of the Community Service Society of New York's annual cocktail reception and raffle?
The cocktail party is a venue for us to not only raise awareness of some of the issues that face low-income New Yorkers, but showcase CSS's impact on New York City. It's also one of the best deals in Manhattan - only $50 for 2-hour open bar, food, DJ, and a great crowd. And then there is the raffle and silent auction! For half the amount you would usually spend on a night out in the city, you're making a significant contribution to New Yorkers in need. All the proceeds of the event benefit CSS's many programs. What makes you smile?
A Stevie Wonder song popping up on my iPod when it's shuffling.
What's your favorite spring activity?
Sidewalk-dining.
What outer borough place you always say you would like to see but probably never will?
Orchard Beach in the Bronx.
What is your favorite place in New York for people watching?
The steps of the Met and the Great Lawn in Central Park.
What's the best improvement to New York in the past year?
I suppose this is just prior to a year ago, but the recent renovation of the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
You've been asked to host a party and the only requirement is that you must invite three New York celebrities (alive), who would you extend an invite to?
Jay-Z, Bill Clinton, and Kelly Ripa. If one them can't make it, I'd call Jon Stewart.
