, the exceptional "Arts & Technology Center" that presents some of the most innovative experimental theater in NYC, is being threatened with eviction by the MTA, which owns the company's space at 80 Greenwich Street. After relocating to the new multi-theater venue after its former home at 30 West Broadway was destroyed on 9/11, the company signed a 20-year lease at $21,666.67 a month.
But the recession cost 3LD funding, and it now owes $306,000 in back rent and interest to the MTA. 3LD claims it's been forced to spend its own money on asbestos abatement and a sprinkler system—work that should have been done by the MTA. But a spokesman for the MTA tells the Wall Street Journal, "I don't know how anyone can justify letting this tenant rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars in back rent at a time when state cuts and deteriorating tax revenues have forced the MTA to lay off station agents and cut service."
