Tomorrow night the Center For Architecture kicks off a Friday night film series devoted to designed and built environments, actual and fictional. On the inaugural marathon film night, Eames Demetrios presents two documentary short subjects and one feature-length film.

ruralstudio.jpgOne documentary focuses on the office of southern California modernists Charles and Ray Eames (Demetrios' grandparents), famous for many aspects of design from their kit-of-parts home to fabric patterns to their ubiquitous fiberglass and plywood chairs. The other film tells the story of architect Samuel Mockbee and his work with Auburn University's Rural Studio, which designed and executed built projects, from homes to community spaces, in the economically-depressed Hale County, Alabama. Gothamist is lucky enough to have met Mockbee, an inspirational designer who transcends the headstrong, egomaniacal stereotype.

The full-length film of the evening is Metropolis (Metoroporisu), an action-adventure crime drama and sci-fi romance. Unrelated to the Fritz Lang classic, this anime cult hit features illustrated cityscapes reminiscent of drawings of future cities from a hundred years ago. There will be a cash bar on site, and complimentary popcorn. Tickets are $10, available online.

The Center for Architecture is located at 536 LaGuardia Place (between Bleecker and West 3rd Streets). The Movie Marathon begins at 6:00 p.m. For more information, call 212-683-0023.
