Miles Davis is getting the biopic treatment from director George Tillman, Jr., who you may recall as the guy who put the Biggie in "the big screen" with 2009's Notorious. If anyone's life and legacy is primed for Hollywood, it's Davis, but will his magnetic aural presence translate on the silver screen?

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Tillman will develop and direct a biopic tentatively titled Miles (what is it with this guy and eponymous movie titles?), with input from Davis's son Gregory, who authored a tell-all book about his father called Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis in 2006. “Our intention is to make a feature film that will appeal beyond the worldwide audience of Miles Davis die-hard fans, to also include those who don't know the first thing about the man, and introduce new ears to his music,” said Raynes. “In much the same way that Walk The Line and Ray were able to open the world's eyes to the life stories of Johnny Cash and Ray Charles, respectively, we want to make a film that will do the same justice for Miles Davis."

The AV Club worries that Tillman will "cram his colorful life story into the prefabricated mold of a music biopic," describing Davis's battles with drugs and his turbulent personal relationships as "music biopic gold." One worthwhile mention here goes to Don Cheadle, who's been trying to get his own Davis biopic off the ground for quite some time without success. Will he hop onboard Thillman's version? If so, he may be one of the few stars with the quiet intensity necessary to pull this Davis thing off—please, Will Smith, stay far, far away.
