J, keyboardist of the Fever, is having a different kind of show tonight. One to display his original, oversized and pressed origami. Head over to Red Humor Salon tonight in Brooklyn (details at right) for the opening reception. Enjoy some beer and a not often seen brand of art.
Later on this week, Friday June 24th, Yoko Ono’s legendary performance Cut Piece will be performed, followed by a discussion on Yoko Ono by Chrissie Iles, film and video curator, Whitney Museum of American Art.
In Cut Piece, a woman sits motionless on the stage with a pair of scissors in front of her, allowing the audience to use them as they wish. Performed by Xaviera Simmons in conjunction with the exhibition At the Mercy of Others: The Politics of Care, the piece precisely tests care for the other: What are the reactions of the public to an unknown person, when given a potentially violent instrument in a situation with no pre-given rules of engagement?
Cut Piece was originally performed in 1964 by Yoko Ono and has since been interpreted in different ways, including explorations of violence and victimization. In a recent statement Yoko Ono wrote:
”When I first performed this work, in 1964, I did it with some anger and turbulence in my heart. This time I do it with love for you, for me, and for the world.”
The event is FREE and will take place Friday June 24 at 7 pm at the Harold M. Proshansky Auditorium at the CUNY Graduate Center [34th St & 5th Ave]
