Today's Google Doodle is an interactive 3-D Rubik's Cube, which you are free to spend the rest of your Monday futzing with. The Doodle celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the puzzle's invention by Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor Erno Rubik. It's pretty neat; Google's virtual version lets you spin the cube to see all sides, and it also tracks how many moves it takes you to solve it/fail at solving it/give up on life.
It initially took Rubik weeks to solve his own invention, but with practice he was able to solve cube in under a minute, which is pretty pitiful considering the world record is less than six seconds.
According to the official Rubik's website, "Erno has always thought of the Cube primarily as an object of art, a mobile sculpture symbolizing stark contrasts of the human condition: bewildering problems and triumphant intelligence; simplicity and complexity; stability and dynamism; order and chaos."
