Hayes Peebles is a 14 year old New York singer/songwriter. Along with his guitar, he carries with him the perfect amount of experience and innocence - giving his listeners a little of both through his songs. This week he'll be opening up our 11th Movable Hype show, give a listen: Gone Grey.mp3
When and why did you start writing songs?
I started writing songs December 2005. I started writing original pieces because I had played a Hurricane Katrina benefit playing all covers and felt that I wanted to expand what I was doing musically.
Where/when was your first show?
My first legitimate show was at the Rockwood Music Hall, June of 2006. I played about 5 guitar originals and covers of Thelonious Monk, Ben Kweller and The Honorary Title on piano. The crowd was essentially just family and friends.
Where do you find inspiration for your songwriting?
I look for it everywhere, in people, places and things. Usually I just feel when it's the right time to write, and all my thoughts up to that point get compiled into my music.
What is your first conscious memory of living in New York?
My first conscious memory would have to be running around the apartment, hiding, playing with my sister and going to "Daffy's" with my Polish babysitter during the day.
Now its time for some fill-in-the-blank action
You know you've made it when...?
People keep your name at arm's length. (Or you hear your shit on the radio.)
It'll be time to pack up the gear for good when...?
Pack up for good? Never.
I'll never forget the first time I...?
Got up on stage and played in front of a crowd.
Let's have some fun with word association. Give me your immediate feelings on the following (if you?ve got no discernable feelings, make something up that won't embarrass you in the morning)
Yankees
A gaudy, white on white, fitted cap I am embarrassed to own (but still wear).
Mets
Going to Shea Stadium with the neighbors who lived below me.
CBGB

Justin Timberlake

A few quickies on the music tip
What was the most played song on your iPod (or an equivalent music playing device) in the past week?
Dirty Whirl- TV on the Radio
Who would be in your ultimate music supergroup, your all-star Olympic team of rock?
To name a few: Jimi, Jean Paul Jones, John Bonham, Robert Cray, David Gilmour, Jeff Buckley
If you released a 7" what would you put on the cover?
The artwork of Jean Michel Basquiat
What was the first/last album you bought on the day it was released?
I don't believe I've ever been that timely.
If Josh Schwartz, creator of the OC asked your band to perform on his tv show (as Modest Mouse, the Killers Tom Vek and the Walkmen have) would you?
Modest Mouse did? That's a shame, and no.
And finally...What came first, the music or the misery?
No misery here.
