With spring FINALLY in full swing, it's time to start taking advantage of all these new-fangled bike lanes we've all heard so much about. To that end, the DOT, Bike New York, the NYPD and the terrific Recycle-A-Bicycle will be throwing one of several "Bike Bonanzas" today. These Bonanzas will be taking place all over the city through the fall, but this one's in Jackson Heights, Queens, in Travers Park, where they'll be giving out free bike helmets for children and adults, teaching kids how to ride a bike, and giving adults important lessons on safe cycling in the city. And that's not all!

Recycle-A-Bicycle, a non-profit organization that encourages cycling by salvaging and repairing old bikes, will be running a kids' bike swap for children who've outgrown their bikes and want to trade them in for something more their size. And members of the NYPD Crime Prevention Unit will be on hand to register bikes. Free of charge, the NYPD will engrave bicycles with unique registration numbers and special decals, which could—and we stress could—help you reclaim your bike if it's ever stolen or spontaneously removed to make way for a presidential motorcade.
