The Central Park Conservancy just announced its selections for its annual film festival, which runs Monday, August 18 through Friday, August 22. And this year's theme is "Scenes From Our City," focusing on movies in which NYC plays a prominent role.
The movies are a nice complement to the growing number of free summer movies, like the animal-themed flicks at Brooklyn Bridge Park and the sea, air, space pictures at the Intrepid:
Monday, August 18: Big (FAO Schwarz is the most famous, but remember Josh Baskin's amazing SoHo loft?)
Tuesday, August 19: The Royal Tenenbaums (so many locations, but the Tenenbaums' house is at 144th Street and Convent Avenue)
Wednesday, August 20: The Way We Were (stroll around the Plaza Hotel after you've bawled your eyes out)
Thursday, August 21: Coming to America
Friday, August 22: Rear Window (it wasn't filmed in New York, but it takes place in the West Village, with James Stewart's character living on West 10th Street)
The Central Park Conservancy says, "Films are shown in the landscape north of Sheep Meadow, beside the cafe (mid-Park at 69th Street). Enter the Park at 72nd Street. All screenings begin at 8:00 pm, rain or shine, with gates open to the public at 6:30 pm. A DJ will perform from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. All movies will be closed captioned. Bring a picnic! Visit centralparknyc.org/filmfestival for more information."
