The team behind the Brooklyn Night Bazaar has signed a multi-year lease with the National Parks Service in the Rockaways to "re-imagine the beach experience at Jacob Riis Park" with "abundant activities, entertainment, shopping, food, and drinks." Starting Memorial Day weekend, the newly-coined Riis Park Beach Bazaar will present rock shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, as well as offer beach chair rentals, games, food from vendors like The Brooklyn Star and Fletcher’s BBQ, and a variety of alcoholic beverages. Fort Tilden may be a little less crowded this summer.
The beach chair rental ($10 online, $15 on-site) comes with an interesting twist: people will be able order food and drink directly to their beach chairs using a smartphone. The Bazaar is also offering shuttle bus service as part of package deals starting at $33. As always, there is round-trip ferry service available to nearby Riis landing, but roundtrip tickets start at $30. NYC Beach Bus is up and running this year, with $12 round-trip tickets.
The food vendors will operate seven days a week out of the large pavilion at Bay 9 (a former Howard Johnson's), which has a newly renovated kitchen and prep space. Food concessions will also be sold at Bay 6, a separate building directly facing Riis Park’s iconic clock tower. (A rotating array of mobile food vendors will also be on hand.) Here's the list of participating food vendors so far.
In keeping with the Brooklyn Night Bazaar theme, a number of vendors will operate along the boardwalk selling arts and crafts, antiques, new and vintage clothing, sunglasses, jewelry and records. We're also told there will be "nail artists, tattoo artists, hair stylists, tarot readers" and more. Here's the live music calendar, which is still coming together but kicks off May 23rd with MOTHXR (featuring Penn Badgley of Gossip Girl, Greetings From Tim Buckley), Avan Lava, Religia, and Banker$ DJ.
