When Gothamist used to work in Times Square the Chashama theater and art spaces took up much of the 42nd Street block we would walk down every day. When a more corporate development moved in, they moved down to 37th Street. This Friday Chad Beckim's play "A Matter of Choice" will premiere in the theater. Gothamist is particularly interested in this play since the plot revolves around the impending construction of the 2nd Avenue subway. More specifically, when construction of the Second Avenue subway forces three unlikely twenty-something roommates to vacate their prime Manhattan apartment, each member of this tight knit family must make a personal choice: either fight to stay together or accept the distance friendships can drift - even under the same roof.
Performances are at Chashama, located at 208 West 37th Street [between 7th and 8th Aves], and they run tonight through April 9, Wednesday - Saturday at 8:00pm. Tickets are $15. For information or reservations call 212-352-3101 or visit theatermania.com.
Also, Chashama is worth checking out even if you can't make it to this particular play. They have a number of events and programs dedicated to the artist, including A.R.E.A. (Accessing Real Estate for the Arts) which sets up artist spaces through interim occupancy.
