Disgraced former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner will be forced to register as a sex offender for sending lewd messages to a teenager.
Bronx Supreme Court Judge Raymond Bruce ordered the designation during a court hearing on Friday. Weiner, who is currently residing at a Bronx halfway house, was not present for the ruling.
In consultation with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, the judge determined Weiner should receive the Level 1 sex offender status — the lowest of three levels. Under state law, he will remain on the sex offender list for 20 years, but will not have to give out his address every time he moves.
In 2017, six years after resigning from Congress over revelations that he was sexting with numerous women, Weiner was arrested for sexting with a 15-year-old girl. Prosecutors said that Weiner instructed her to touch herself "with full knowledge" of her age, then watched as she did so via Skype. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison, and was transferred to a halfway house in February.
Weiner will be back on the streets — and possibly, God help us, our Twitter feeds — on May 14th.
