For years the folks behind Nitehawk Cinema have been working on their second New York City location, housed in the old Pavilion Theater across from Prospect Park. And now, at long last, they've announced their grand opening will be December 19th.
When the $10 million renovation project was announced in 2016, a spokesperson said the cinema was expected to reopen in late 2017. But preserving the original theater's architectural details took longer than expected. During the renovation of what will now be called Nitehawk Prospect Park, the new owners unearthed a historic balcony from back when it was the Sanders Theater (circa the 1920s). So we expect that to be restored to its former glory. (We also expect the infamous Pavilion Theater bedbug problem to be eradicated.)
As for what else in store? They aren't offering a lot of info right now, but the theater will be pretty similar to the Nitehawk in Williamsburg; they say, "Park Slope can expect the same dine-in concept as Nitehawk Williamsburg, same vibe and diverse mix of repertory and first-run programming, including more family-friendly programming. The size of the venue will also allow for quality Hollywood blockbuster first-run films as well as independent films. As always, we’ll be very judicious in what we choose."
Nitehawk Prospect Park is located at 188 Prospect Park West in Brooklyn.
