The killing of a man inside a Target store occurred after the victim and others allegedly chased someone while wielding a "large knife," police say.

The person being chased was armed with a gun and fired once, killing Spencer Carlton, 25, late Wednesday night at the Target store in the City Point shopping center in downtown Brooklyn. The NYPD announced that two people have been arrested so far: Bobby Jackson, 44, who was charged with criminal possession of a weapon (a loaded firearm), reckless endangerment; menacing, and unlawful possession of marijuana; and Gregory Kimble, 26, who was charged with reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, assault, and menacing.

Following an argument, police say Jackson was chased by a group that included Carlton. Someone in the group had a machete, police sources told NBC NY.

The Daily News reports, "At the store’s entrance, security guards tried to intervene but the group threatened them and they backed off, police said. The group surrounded and argued with the shooter, with one of them pulling out a large knife." After the shooting, the News says, "As Spencer lay dying, the shooter ran out of the mall, with the rest of the enraged group chasing him again. The gang caught the shooter and started beating him."

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is going on a walk-through of the shopping center this afternoon. He has been raising his concerns over gun violence in downtown Brooklyn for months now; in October, there was a broad daylight shooting at the corner of Pearl and Willoughby streets. "Young people were in the immediate vicinity of this shooting, as were members of my office," Adams said at the time. "Gun violence anywhere is unacceptable, and it is particularly heinous for what appears to be gang-related activity threatening vulnerable children, families, and seniors around the busy Fulton Mall area."
