The Bronx Night Market, which claims to be the first of its kind in the borough, is kicking things off this weekend with over 40 vendors.

The market is the brainchild of Marco Shalma, founder of the Bronx-based creative agency BLOX and Amanda Celestino, publisher at Edible Bronx; the two collaborated with the Fordham Business Improvement District to bring this thing together.

According to Shalma, the market will reflect the diversity of the Bronx, with 99% of the vendors coming from the area. Vendors include City Tamale in Hunt's Point, Empanology, which supplies to Mottley Kitchen in South Bronx, and Millie Peartree Fish Fry & Soul on Grand Concourse at Fordham Road. The Bronx Brewery will be exclusively offering their limited run beer Limoncello Milkshake IPL.

Items will be priced at $3, $5, and $7. "Your $20 is going a long way," said Shalma.

Their unofficial motto is "Eat yo' heart out, NY. The Bronx is cooking." Shalma wants the Night Market to counter the negative image of the Bronx. "People didn't treat the Bronx with respect, its been looked down," he said. "It has been our ongoing mission to make sure that the residents of our borough have more to be proud of, and that greater New York recognizes the kind of Bronx we know exists."

The Night Market will be held on the last Saturday of each month through October, from 4 to 9 p.m. It will also feature live music from Bronx-based singer-songwriter Bryan Durieux and cumbia-ska-funk band Consumata Sonidera. It's located at Fordham Plaza (you can take either the D train to Fordham Road or the 4 train to Fordham Road).
