That adorable red building that used to occupy Pier 17 in South Street Seaport has been replaced with a new sleek-looking thing, which is less charming and does not house a Pizzeria Uno. But it will open this July 28th nonetheless, and with it will come upscale shops and a new summer music series.
The Seaport Music Festival has hosted concerts over on the Pier for 15 years (going on 16), with free shows and lineups mostly featuring local bands (The National, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Ted Leo, Sugar Hill Gang, to name a few).
This new series is much more LiveNation-y. Because it's booked by LiveNation. And that comes with Ticketmaster prices and fees. These shows will be held in a different area, as well — on the rooftop of the new Pier 17 building (the series is fittingly called the Pier 17 Rooftop Concert Series), which, fine, looks pretty sweet. The open air space is 1.5-acres, and holds 2,400 (seated) to 3,400 (standing). You can check out the lineup below.
And as for the Seaport Music Festival (which returned last summer after a three-year hiatus), this afternoon organizer Stephen Dima told us that while they haven't announced it yet, they'll be back this year, too.
