Pizza, that orgiastic fusion of cheese, tomato and bread, stands as one of the pinnacles of human achievement. As poet Henry Rollins once said, "pizza makes me think that anything is possible." Any opportunity we as a society get to celebrate pizza should be fully maximized, and this fall, New Yorkers will be able to pay tribute at the city's first "Museum of Pizza."
Organized by media company Nameless Network, the Museum Of Pizza will pop-up from October 13th through October 28th at an as-yet undisclosed location. They bill it as the world's "first and only immersive art experience celebrating pizza," with interdisciplinary programming including large-scale, pizza-inspired immersive rooms, films, music, art, and more cheesy highlights. There will also be a "pizza art gallery, cheese cave, pizza beach, pizza meditation, exclusive film screenings, and more" at the pop-up. If the words "cheese cave" and "pizza beach" aren't enough to entice you, I don't know what will.
Most importantly, as much as we'd love to get the Pizza Time Players back together, this isn't viral marketing for Chuck E. Cheese or anything like that. According to spokesperson Marcella Zimmermann, the museum is an original concept created by Nameless Network and "not a promo for a company or brand."
In case it's not totally clear, this event is very much geared toward the Instagram-set, similar to the selfie-baiting Museum Of Ice Cream that popped up downtown a few years ago. The sensual artwork featured on the Instagram and website of the Museum Of Pizza—not to mention the gyrating models in the exclusive promo video above—take things to a very sexual place. Zimmerman explained, "We think the marketing creative reflects how people really feel about pizza—they LOVE it."
But you might be wondering: what about the pizza? Celebrating pizza with selfies, sensual marketing, art projects and the like is all well and good, but I need something physical I can stuff down my gullet. According to the event page, "every ticket holder is entitled to one free slice at or outside the venue (and the Museum will do its best to make additional pizza available)." So that is hopeful...as long as it doesn't go the way of the New York City Pizza Festival disaster. A pizza festival with not enough 'za is like a Fyre Festival with not enough Ja [Rule].
Ticket prices are $35 per person, with Seniors (60+) and children (3-12) accompanied by a parent or legal guardian free with valid ID (subject to museum capacity). Pre-sale tickets are available now here.
