The 6th annual Momo Crawl celebrates dollar dumplings in Jackson Heights this Sunday with a self-guided tour to over 20 restaurants and food trucks serving the Himalayan dumplings. The event concludes with the awarding of the Championship Momo Belt (née the Momo Trophy) to the vendor deemed most popular by vote.
Jeff Orlick, founder of the Momo Crawl, has changed the format a bit this year. Attendees must purchase a Momo Passport ($10) in advance of the crawl—to be picked up on the day of the event at Diversity Plaza—which will direct them to the restaurants participating in the event. Proceeds from the sales of these passports will benefit Students for a Free Tibet, a not-for-profit that "works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence."
The rest of the crawl unfolds has it has in previous years, with restaurants and trucks selling $1 momo beginning at 2 p.m. until the votes are counted and a winner crowned around 4:30 p.m. Dancing, music and other live entertainment will take place on 37th Road between 74th and 75th Streets; two vintage trolley buses have also been hired to shuttle people between dumplings destinations.
