Saturday at Comic Con is always a jam-packed cosplay party, and yesterday's massive gathering at the Javits Center was no exception.
Murderous "It Clowns" definitely won the award for most popular cosplay that didn't exist last year, and other popular inspirations included Rick and Morty, Legend of Zelda, Guardians of the Galaxy, Beauty and the Beast, Dragon Ball Z, and, of course, the seemingly infinite number of superheroes and villains from both the Marvel and DC universes.
In addition to all of the cosplay ogling, there was much commerce in which to indulge, with vinyl toy manufacturers once again outdrawing the sellers of actual comics in the cavernous vendor halls. Autographs from and photos with celebrities also took a huge amount of Javits real estate and attendees cash, with top photo-op prices going to William Shatner ($115), a trio from American Gods ($155), and Mark Hamill, who fetched a staggering $286 for a single snap.
As always among Comic Con cosplayers, the atmosphere at Javits was inclusive, supportive, respectful, and encouraging. The vast majority of these outfits and props are entirely handmade, with some cosplayers spending months leading up to the convention (and, presumably, Halloween) pulling it all together. And everyone is remarkably patient with the hundreds of photo requests they face as they wander the aisles. Comic Con continues today, but is entirely sold out.
