Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins are headed back to Broadway: Lincoln Center has just announced that a revival of My Fair Lady will open in 2018, starring Lauren Ambrose, best known for her work in Six Feet Under, as the Cockney flower seller, and Harry Hadden-Paton (Bertie on Downton Abbey and Martin Charteris in The Crown) as the professor of phonetics.
Rounding out the cast will be Dame Diana Rigg (Emma Peel, Olenna Tyrell) as Higgins' mother and Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline) as Eliza's father.
The production is being staged by Bartlett Sher, who had wanted to revive Funny Girl with Ambrose in 2011. The revival never happened, and Sher told the NY Times, "Funny Girl was just an unfortunate series of circumstances. Lauren is an extraordinarily talented actor, who has such an amazing combination of skills. So in a weird way, it’s kind of even better to be doing Shaw, Lerner and Loewe."
Fun fact: Rumor had it that Colin Firth was on the wish list for Henry Higgins.
There are videos of Ambrose—many from 2010—showing off her vocal chops:
My Fair Lady at the Vivian Beaumont Theater will start previews on March 15th of 2018 with opening night scheduled for April 19th.
