The scenes out of Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria are heartbreaking, and that's without even considering the months and years of effort it will take to rebuild from the storm. City and state officials have sent aid to the island, and you can do your part to help as well, by donating cash or goods to any of the following relief efforts.

FDNY Firehouse Supply Drives

Mayor de Blasio announced that 18 firehouses around the city will be accepting diapers, baby food, batteries, first aid supplies and feminine hygiene products between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Note that those are the only supplies the city will be collecting there, and that all the items you donate must be non-perishable, unused and can't contain any liquid.

Monica Puig fundraiser

Puerto Rican tennis star Monica Puig wrote that she was "heartbroken by the devastation that hurricane Maria has brought to my beloved Puerto Rico," and in response to the storm, has set up a YouCaring fundraiser whose proceeds will go towards relief efforts on the island.

Major League Baseball player fundraisers

Three other Puerto Rican athletes have also started fundraisers to aid their island home: former Met Carlos Beltran, who donated one million dollars of his own money, former Yankee Jorge Posada, who's raised over $130,000 so far, and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who's set a goal of one million dollars for his fundraiser.

ConPRmetidos

This local nonprofit usually focuses on connecting Puerto Ricans abroad with locals on the island to promote economic development there. The fundraiser the organization is running will provide money and goods for groups doing long-term relief efforts on the ground, which they define as things like "rebuilding houses according to safety codes or giving energy generators for common areas in disconnected communities."

GoFundMe

Like the company did during Hurricane Harvey, GoFundMe has collected all of the fundraisers looking to provide assistance to Puerto Rico in one place on the website.

GlobalGiving

GlobalGiving is an umbrella organization that puts nonprofits, businesses and donors together so that local nonprofits can get things like training, support and funding. The money they raise in their Hurricane Maria fund will go towards short-term relief goals like providing food, water and medicine to survivors in the immediate aftermath of the storm, before getting shifted to providing support to local groups doing rebuilding work on the island.

United for Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico's first lady, Beatriz Rosselló, partnered with a number of private sector companies to sponsor a fundraiser that you can donate to through PayPal, directly to a bank fund or by texting your donation.

Storm of Support

Today, September 23rd, Borough President Eric Adams and Pro Era Records will be leading donation drives in three different places. From noon to 1 p.m., the Pro Era truck will be parked at East River State Park, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. the truck will be at Fort Greene Park, and it will appear a final time at Brooklyn Borough Hall later in the day. At each location, the truck will be accepting donations of items like baby formula, canned food, socks and underwear, hand sanitizer, toiletries and heavy duty trash bags. Anyone who donates goods will get a wristband that earns you entrance into a thank you party hosted by Joey Bada$$, Pro Era Records and the borough president's office.
