A Citi Bike user was hit by an SUV driver earlier this morning in Kips Bay, according to a witness on the scene and the FDNY.
A spokesperson for the FDNY told Gothamist that the department responded to a call about a pedestrian struck at the corner of East 31st Street and 3rd Avenue just before 11:10 a.m. today. The injured person was taken to Bellevue Hospital to be treated for their injuries.
Ilya, a tipster who witnessed the aftermath of the crash, said that the injured cyclist was a young man, and that the driver of the Lincoln Navigator remained on the scene after the crash and was being interviewed by a police officer. Ilya told us that he heard the driver tell the officer on the scene that their front wheel hit the cyclist.
The cyclist was still conscious, and the bike itself "was damaged from the front basket to the back wheel" according to Ilya. A super from a nearby building who Ilya spoke to said that he saw the cyclist get hit as he was pulling the bike out of the nearby Citi Bike dock.
"As an avid cyclist myself, I use that docking station almost daily. The street itself is quite wide, certainly enough for a biker and car to pass safely next to each other," he told us.
Earlier this week, a truck driver ran over a woman on a Citi Bike at 30th Street and 7th Avenue, and a box truck driver struck and killed a cyclist on Broadway and Walker Street in TriBeCa.
