All weather eyes are on Hurricane Harvey today as that storm has blown up to a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph just southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas. Harvey is expected to make landfall this afternoon and then very slowly creep northeastward along the Texas coast this weekend. The slow movement means that much of southeastern Texas could see 1-2 feet of rain through early next week. All that rain will come on top of the storm surge flooding, which could exceed 9 feet of water in some locations.
The weather around here promises to be much quieter over the weekend and into next week. A massive high pressure system over Lake Michigan this morning will slowly drift northeastward over the weekend, keeping us in the cool, dry portion of the air mass.
We can expect mostly sunny skies from today through Monday. Afternoon highs each day will be in the mid to upper 70s for the penultimate weekend of summer. Morning lows will be in the lower 60s in the city and a bit cooler as away from the ocean and in more rural areas. The forecast gets very uncertain after Monday as a result of a shifting jet stream and possibly a tropical disturbance (not Harvey) moving up the East Coast.
