The Secret Service has announced that they've ditched their Trump Tower command post after a rent dispute with the Trump Organization. Midtown is so over.

The presidential protection organization moved their command center out of the apartment complex and into trailers on the street after being unable to agree on the terms of their lease with their landlord, The Trump Organization, according to the Washington Post. Reports after the election said the Secret Service was looking at rents as high as $3 million per year in an apartment one floor below President Trump's apartment in Trump Tower.

Like any landlord wielding their power over hapless renters, a Trump Organization spokesperson told the Post that "it was mutually determined that it would be more cost effective and logistically practical for the Secret Service to lease space elsewhere."

At the moment, that cost-effective and practical space is a trailer on the street, a solution security experts told the paper isn't great for safety. As an example, there's a worry that radio transmissions could break up if they're sent between Secret Service agents actually outside Trump's residence 50 floors above the street and agents in the trailer.

A former Secret Service agent told the Post that the situation is "like having the quarterback of the football game actually being located in a different stadium than where the game is being played."

The U.S. military is still a tenant in the building, however, possibly because they relied on the trick every temporary resident of New York goes with: subletting. The White House Military Office is renting an apartment for legally required military communications from a tenant in the building for $130,000 per month. If the Secret Service is trying to figure out where they could also find a sublet, I've got a hot tip for them (although they should really be careful before putting any money down, there are scammers everywhere).
