A cyclist was killed in Greenpoint early this morning when he was struck by the driver of a garbage truck, who then kept driving, according to police.
Cops say that the early-morning hit-and-run happened just before 12:30 a.m. this morning, when police responded to a call about a cyclist struck by a driver near Franklin Street and Noble Street in Greenpoint.
When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old male cyclist in the street with trauma to his body. EMS who were also on the scene pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene.
An initial investigation by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad determined that the cyclist was biking on Franklin Street, when he was struck by the garbage truck driver who was moving south on Franklin. The garbage truck driver then left the scene after striking the cyclist. A police source told Gothamist that the cyclist was on a black and yellow bike, and that the green and white sanitation truck was believed to have been operated by a private sanitation company.
The cyclist's identity is being withheld pending family notification, and no arrests have been made. The NYPD said that the investigation remains ongoing.
