Crown Heights, the prison drama about the life of a wrongfully convicted Brooklyn man, is coming to the big screen next month, and this week we got our first peek at the Sundance-acclaimed independent film:
The movie tells the story of Collin Warner, played by Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Get Out), who was sentenced to life in prison for a murder he didn't commit. After four lawyers failed to get Warner out of prison, his friend Carl ‘KC’ King "becomes a do-it-yourself investigator... accomplishing all sorts of things the police and the professionals can't," according to a 2005 episode of "This American Life" about the case. (Filmmaker Matt Ruskin tells us his film is adapted from the episode.)
A Hollywood studio previously rejected the true story in 2002, calling it "over the top," City Limits reports. After strong reviews and an audience award at Sundance, Amazon Studios bought the rights to the film earlier this year.
The movie was written and directed by Ruskin, and filmed in New York in 2015, according to Deadline.
Crown Heights hits theaters on August 25th.
