One of the most coveted homes in the East Village is on the market for the first time ever. The property, in part, sits on the rooftop of 72 East 1st Street, offering the unusual experience of living in what looks like a bucolic beach home while being located just above the New York City streets.

The property is going for just $3.5 million—for that price, you get the rooftop home, which is a studio apartment (with a bathroom and kitchenette), as well as a separate three-bedroom duplex in the building. According to the listing, the rooftop home was designed to look like "a Nantucket cottage with weathered shingles," and features a cupola, french doors, and a wraparound terrace.

In the building unit (located on the entire fourth and fifth floors), you'll get a separate space featuring 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, exposed beams in the great room, a balcony, views for days, a kitchen, a wood burning fireplace, a dressing room, and so much more square-footage than you'll need that I would be willing to live there so you don't waste any of the space. I am an excellent roommate who knows absolutely nothing about squatter's rights.

The home, according to the NY Post, was the brainchild of late artist and activist Henry Merwin Shrady III, who purchased the then-vacant building in 1980, and kept the top two floors for himself. His widow, Gale Barrett Shrady, is the current owner and has placed the 4th and 5th floors, as well as the penthouse home, on the market to be sold together. [h/t Curbed]
