A man who thought he was buying an iPhone was stabbed in the chest during a sidewalk smartphone scam, police say.
The incident occurred on June 29th, 2017, around 5:50p.m. in the Bronx, near East 167th Street and Grand Concourse, according to the NYPD. Apparently, the 38-year-old victim paid a person for an iPhone, but after handing over the money, he "looked inside the box and noticed there was no phone inside," police say.
The victim started to chase the iPhone grifter but investigators say another person who was nearby "pursued the victim and stabbed him in his chest."
The victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police released a video of the iPhone box seller, describing him as being about 5'6" and 230 pounds, and wearing a cap.
There is no description of the alleged stabber.
Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
