A tow truck driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in a Queens intersection was arrested following the Friday afternoon crash, according to the NYPD.
Cops say that they responded to a call about a pedestrian who was stuck by a vehicle at the intersection of 217th Street and Jamaica Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. When the arrived on the scene, they found a 70-year-old woman, later identified as Donna Hahl of Valley Stream, unconscious in the street with head and body injuries. EMS transported Hahl to Jamaica Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad says that the driver of a Ford tow truck, 29-year-old Mandip Singh of Queens, was driving south on 217th Street and made a left turn onto Jamaica Avenue while he had a green light, which is when he struck Hahl as she tried to cross Jamaica Avenue. Singh remained on the scene, and was arrested and charged with a violation of New York City's right of way law and failure to exercise due care.
Earlier this week, the mayor's office announced that the fewest number of people had died in crashes in the first six months of 2017 than in the first six months of any year since the city began keeping track of traffic deaths.
