"SAY WHAT NOW" was the reaction of cocktail aficionado and Gothamist contributor Dan Dickinson when I told him about the "Negroni Fountain" coming to the former Genuine space on Grand Street in Little Italy on Thursday. Dickinson knows a hell of a lot more about cocktails than I do, so let's take him at his word that this is some genuinely exciting news for those who prefer their alcohol in spirit form.

Dante—the next generation of the 100-year-old Greenwich Village staple—will be operating said fountain as part of a partnership with the now-closed restaurant component of the Genuine establishments run by AvroKo. The pop-up of sorts will be called "DANTE at GENUINE."

"If there's any cocktail bar in the city I'd associate with a singular drink, it's Dante and negronis," Dickinson continued. "They've had this whole 'Negroni Sessions' menu for the last year or so where they're doing interesting takes and twists on them." Tales of the Cocktail has seen fit to nominate Dante for the Best American Restaurant Bar for its 2017 Spirited Awards, if Dickinson's praise wasn't enough to encourage you to give their drinks a try.

The Dante incarnation will take over the former Genuine Superette space and bring with them their "Summer of Spritz" menu, which focuses on Italian apertivo and spirits that make up classic cocktails like the negroni.

The crown jewel will be the fountain, no doubt, a bubbling mini-fountain that vends Classic Negronis (gin, Campari and Italian vermouth). The fountain will sit at the bar where bartenders can monitor guests, who can serve themselves Negronis ($14/each) from glasses placed around the fountain itself.

Other drinks designed by Dante's Naren Young include an Aperol Spritz Slushi, bottled Cucumber Elderflower Spritzes, the Garibaldi with Campari and fluffy orange juice, and La Dolce Dante, made with gin, limoncello, bianco vermouth and lemon soda.

Beyond the bevs, chef de cuisine Rachael Polhill created unique-to-the-pop-up food dishes including sourdough flatbreads in colors and flavors that complement the Italian flag and Italian cuisine, plus a section of "Fritti" (fried) items including calamari, soft shell crab, and zucchini. Finally...tableside tiramisu dished out to order from a giant bowl.

191 Grand Street; dante-nyc.com // eatgenuine.com. DANTE at GENUINE will operate daily from 11 a.m. til 12 p.m. for breakfast, with the full menu available until 10 p.m. Daily Aperitivo Afternoons run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with specials on food and drinks.
