A 28-year-old man visiting New York fell to his death at a Manhattan hotel on Thursday afternoon. A person dining at the Marriott Marquis said, "I was eating in the restaurant with my family when I heard screams and a loud thump."
Joseph Seminara was found in the bottom of an elevator shaft at the Times Square hotel around 3:45 p.m. He was observed climbing over a glass barrier to an elevator shaft on the eight floor, police sources said. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Glass elevators ascend through the hotel's soaring atrium from the main 8th floor lobby to the 48th floor; the lower floors have conference rooms and a theater.
A spokeswoman for the Marriott Marquis in Times Square told the Daily News, "We’re not sure if this is a suicide, but it appears to be."
If someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide: do not leave the person alone; remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt; and call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.
