In the not too distant future, you're going to be spending a lot of time in Penn Station when you have to catch a train there, because even with all of the construction meant to fix the station's many delays, more delays and disruptions will definitely pop up. But at the very least, you'll be able to pace and curse the MTA while hanging out in a new concourse that looks like it comes from a much more distant future. I'm talking like, a Logan's Run kind of future.
Penn Station's new West End Concourse adds a new entrance to the much-maligned station, allowing commuters to get into the station through the Farley Post Office for the first time. It's the first section of the eventual 255,000-square foot Moynihan Train Hall to open, a train hall that will eventually come with 112,000 square feet of retail space and 588,000 square feet of office space. Allegedly, construction will finish in December 2020.
The concourse, with its clean white hallways and soft blue lighting that should calm your thoughts of tearing up the tracks with your hands as you wait for a train, brings to mind a future that hasn't quite arrived yet. A future in which civilization is contained to a domed city run by a computer, where residents devote their lives to endless pleasure, until they're summoned to be "renewed" at Carrousel once they turn 30.
