Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears, for so today continues the beautiful, relentless hot weather we were promised by the gods and meteorologists. Accuweather is predicting a high of 95 degrees today—a RealFeel® of 105 degrees!—and I for one am SO OVERJOYED I very nearly put on deodorant this morning. Summer brings out everyone's best personal hygiene habits.
Today's temperatures could potentially eclipse a record of 96 degrees, set on this date in 1961, but either way we're well above June 13th's typical high of 79 degrees. And though the state of my hair suggests the humidity's not too bad today—a fact agreed upon by Weather.com, which professes a relative humidity level of 39 percent—there's still an air quality advisory in effect until 10 p.m. tonight, courtesy of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Note that this heat wave won't last much longer, and neither will whatever footwear you chose to don today—weatherpersons say we'll be getting some isolated thunderstorms this afternoon, with "heavy downpours, small hail, lightning and gusty winds" headed our way sometime between 2 and 10 p.m., according to NBC New York. Tomorrow and Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop to a more normal 70 to 80 degrees.
So, those of you less thrilled by today's heat can take solace in the fact that it won't last for long—until it presumably comes back with a vengeance in July, that is. In the meantime, I'd like to file a formal complaint with the NYC public transit system, as I rode a C train this morning with an air-conditioning system that seemed designed to turn bare skin into a patch of ice. Never forget your subway sweater, folks.
