We've got another hot one on tap for today. This brief heat wave, our second of the year, should peak this afternoon. Central Park hit 90 degrees for the fourth time this year yesterday, and today's high should be very close to the record of 93 set in 1973. Extremely trivial fun fact: June 12th is the only day of the month where the record high is less than 95 degrees.
This heat wave is courtesy of extensive and deep ridge of high pressure over the eastern half of the country. In the northeast, the ridge is expected to slowly give way to a cold front moving down from Canada tomorrow. The front won't pass through the city until tomorrow night, so we'll have to put up with another hot and humid day. Tuesday's high will probably reach the lower 90s and with dew points in the upper 60s it will be disgustingly muggy. Clouds will build up in the afternoon followed by a chance for drenching showers or a thunderstorm as the front draws near.
Much more comfortable weather, at least for a couple of days, will arrive once the front passes. A cool Canadian air mass will give us sunny skies and a high near 80 on Wednesday and in the lower 70s on Thursday. By Friday, though, the cold front will reverse direction and head northward as a warm front. That will likely give us a cool, wet Friday and warmer, unsettled weather over the weekend.
