Hundreds of protesters gathered in Foley Square this past Saturday to demand a thorough investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the election and the country's possible collusion with the Trump campaign. Another coordinated rally comes to Foley Square this Saturday—this one hosted by right-wing group ACT! For America, as part of the group's nationwide March Against Sharia. At least three counter-protests are already planned, so expect things to get hectic in the area. We've rounded up those demonstrations below, as well as the local solidarity events, interfaith vigils, and ritual hexes planned for the coming week.
Building the Solidarity Economy in New York City
Ahead of this month's Conference for Workplace Democracy, the New Economy Coalition hosts this panel at Starr Bar focused on the history of community-controlled economic institutions, and how we might continue "building powerful bottom-up solutions that model economic democracy, sustainability, and social justice." Speakers represent a range of the city's labor and social justice groups, including the New Economy Coalition, SolidarityNYC, the New York City Community Land Initiative, and NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives.
Monday, June 5th, 7 p.m. // Starr Bar 214 Starr Street, Brooklyn
Brooklyn Community Vigil for Refugees
The Brooklyn Synagogue Coalition will commemorate the 78th anniversary of the United States turning away the M.S. St Louis, a boat carrying over 900 Jewish refugees, with an interfaith vigil outside of Brooklyn Borough Hall on Tuesday. Both historic remembrance and protest of the current attack on the refugee program, the event calls on participants to "stand together to call on our elected officials not to repeat the mistakes of our past." The vigil includes a Yarzheit candel lighting, group singing, and a student performance.
Tuesday, June 6th, 6 p.m. // Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street
Kids Activism Day
The weekly social activism meeting hosted by #GetOrganizedBK gets a shot of youthful energy on Thursday with an all age activism workshop partially hosted by children. The event will focus on access to education, with an opportunity for teens and adults to write letters to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Popular Park Slope diner Dizzy's hosts the gathering.
Thursday, June 8th, 9 a.m. // Dizzy's Diner, 230 5th Avenue, Brooklyn
Feminist Fight Club
Feminist Fight Club author Jessica Bennett and VOX correspondent Elizabeth Plank lead this discussion on smashing the patriarchy in the workplace, on the street and everywhere in between. Northside Festival presents the free event at Williamsburg multi-disciplinary space Kinfolk, complete with a book signing and bar.
Friday, June 9th, 2:15 p.m. // Kinfolk, 90 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn
Ritual To Hex Donald Trump & His Constituency
This group ritual intended to "hex the Trump administration from further harm against the American people" takes place Saturday night at Catland—"Brooklyn's premiere metaphysical boutique." Participants are welcome to bring their own spells or find inspiration from this ritual template. Taking part in the sorcery costs $10, with half of the night's proceeds going to Planned Parenthood.
Saturday, June 10th, 7:30 p.m. // Catland, 987 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn
NYC Loves Muslims Rally & March
In response to a nationwide March Against Sharia planned for Saturday, thousands of New Yorkers are expected to rally at City Hall for a "positive, love-filled event" meant to "show our love for the Muslim community here and across the nation." A diverse swath of groups have helped organize the rally and march, including Muslims Are Welcome Here, the Women's March Alliance, CAIR, and the Russian-Speaking American LGBT Association. A similar event, hosted by the NYC Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Committee is scheduled to take place during the March Against Sharia rally in Foley Square, and a group of anarchists and anti-fascists are planning on no-platforming the speakers through a counter-noise demonstration.
Saturday, June 10th, 10 a.m. // New York City Hall and Foley Square
