Just in time to save Joey Chestnut's life, the government has recalled over 200,000 pounds of Nathan's and Curtis hot dogs after metal fragments were found in the meat.

The hot dogs' Ohio-based manufacturer, John Morrell & Co., reportedly received three complaints about metal shards in their frankfurters, and on Friday the company notified the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recall applies to all "Nathan's SKINLESS 8 BEEF FRANKS" with an August 19th expiration date and Curtis Beef Master brand beef franks that expire on June 15th.

No one's gotten injured or ill from the tainted dogs yet, but the recall does come in advance of Memorial Day, a day on which statisticians say Americans can eat as many as 71 million hot dogs, so it was just a matter of time.

Please note that with or without metal, a hot dog is not a sandwich.
