Former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin has reportedly filed for divorce from Anthony Weiner, following his guilty plea on a federal sex charge today.
Abedin announced her separation from Weiner last summer, after tabloids reported the former Congressman had been involved in a third sexting scandal that included an image of him in bed with his son. Today, Weiner pleaded guilty to sexting a 15-year-old girl, a charge that could net him a 21 to 27 monthlong prison sentence and will require him to register as a sex offender.
In court today, Weiner accepted "full responsibility for his conduct," and said he is still participating in a sex-addiction rehabilitation program he entered in the fall. "I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse. I apologize to everyone I have hurt. I apologize to the teenage girl, whom I mistreated so badly. I am committed to making amends to all those I have harmed," he said in a statement.
Weiner and Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, have been married for nearly 7 years. They have a 5-year-old son together named Jordan.
The FBI had been investigating Weiner since last year, and this particular sexting incident ultimately wound up being a consequential factor in Clinton's loss to Donald Trump in last year's election. (In case anyone's managed to forget.)
