Now that we've skipped right from winter to ruthless summer, it's time to make plans to escape this sweat-drenched town. And this season, you can swap out sweltering subway platforms for a teeny little cabin perched by the shore of the New York Harbor. Or you can move into your refrigerator, your choice, really.
This summer, Gateway National Recreation Area, which in NYC encompasses Fort Tilden, Jacob Riis Park, Floyd Bennett Field, Great Kills Park, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, and Canarsie Pier, has teamed up with Getaway, a company that creates tiny pop-up houses for campers. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, Getaway will place three little cabins somewhere along the city's harbor shore, so visitors can spend a night in relative isolation inside a National Park. “We’re delighted to be able to provide a way for folks to escape the stress of the city without leaving the five boroughs," Jon Staff, CEO of Getaway, said in a statement.
The houses sleep two people and come complete with mini fridges, fans, a bed, toilet, cooking essentials and running water. They rent for $150-a-night through Getaway's website , and their locations are secret until you make the reservation, which is excellent news if you're trying to ward off a stalker or your real girlfriend. A National Park Service spokesperson would not say where exactly in the Gateway National Recreation Area the cabins will pop up, but we did confirm they will be harborside and not oceanside, and located 30 minutes from Prospect Park from Uber. (They're also near "a boardwalk and a paved bike trail.") Check out this map to get an idea of where that might be.
