It's been a minute since we've reported on all the mail-hoarding Newmans wreaking havoc on the U.S. Postal Service, but there is comfort in repetition: a Queens mailman admitted in court this week to stealing $20K worth of packages on his route over the last two years. At least it's not rats?
The Daily News reports that Richard Wong, 54, was arrested on Friday and charged with stealing thousands of dollars worth of packages since April 2015. Wong, who worked for the Elmhurst Postal Office, allegedly admitted to investigators that he would take five to 10 packages per week, then send their contents to a fence in Canada. The arrangement allegedly netted him $1K-per-month.
Wong has been charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and official misconduct charges. "He has been working here for over 25 years,” a mail carrier told the tabloid. "It’s weird. Nobody suspected anything." Still, Wong joins an increasing list of postal workers who've had run-ins with the law, though this is far less fascinating of a case study than the Brooklyn mailman who allegedly hoarded 10 years worth of mail. Unfortunately, it appears working at the post office does a number on the mind—after all, the mail never stops.
