A man was fatally struck by a taxi driver last night on the Upper East Side, in the same intersection where a woman was fatally hit by a driver last year.
Police say that they responded to a call about a pedestrian who was hit by a driver at the intersection of East 78th Street and York Avenue last night at about 9:30 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, cops say they found a 50-year-old man in the intersection who had been hit by the driver of the cab. EMS took the man to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police spokesman said that the taxi driver was making a left turn onto 78th Street when the driver hit the man crossing from York Avenue going west. The driver remained on the scene and was not charged, and an investigation is ongoing. The name of the pedestrian has not been released yet.
A passenger in the cab told CBS2 that the driver hit the man coming around a corner, and when he did, the pedestrian "went on the hood, the car accelerated a bit, and then the guy slid down the hood and went under the car." The crash happened at the same intersection where a 68-year-old woman was fatally hit by the driver of an SUV last January.
"We got to do something. You know, streets have to be safe to walk," Upper East Side resident Erik Scotsman told CBS following the crash.
