[Update below] A cyclist in Sunnyside was killed when a driver hit him with his car and then fled the scene, according to the NYPD.
Police say they were called to the intersection of 43rd Avenue and 39th Street in Sunnyside, Queens just before 3 a.m. this morning. When they arrived, they found a cyclist, later identified as 32-year-old Gelasio Reyes of North Corona, with injuries to his body. Reyes was transported to Elmhurst Hospital by EMS, who pronounced him dead.
An investigation by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad determined that Reyes was going on east on 43rd Avenue, and was hit in the intersection of 43rd and 39th by the driver of a red Ford Escape that was traveling southbound on 39th Street. The driver then fled the scene. According to an NYPD spokesperson, someone has been arrested after the fatal crash, but no charges have been filed yet.
[Update 4:30 p.m.] Police announced that Cristian Guiracocha, a 25-year-old from Woodside, has been arrested for the hit-and-run. Guiracocha was charged with DWI, driving without a license and refusal to take a Breathalyzer test. According to the Post, when police found Guiracocha, they noticed that his car had a cracked windshield and crumpled in front bumper.
