Nine months after a fatal hit-and-run that took the life of Bronx cyclist Giovanni Nin, police have arrested the driver who allegedly fled the scene after hitting Nin in June.
According to police, Victor Pelaez, a 44-year-old man from the Bronx, was arrested early Friday morning and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Nin was killed on the morning of June 11 when he was riding his bike on East Tremont Avenue. He was hit by a BMW SUV when he attempted to cross north to south on the block. Nin's family said that he was on his way to his girlfriend's house to get some rest before going into a 3 a.m. shift at his job with FedEx.
According to the Post, Pelaez told police that his car had been stolen and that he wasn't driving the car during the hit-and-run. However, detectives saw Palaez driving his BMW on August 10, and also had cell phone records that showed he was near the scene of the fatal collision when it happened. The paper reported that Nin's relatives were upset that a judge set Palaez's bail at $15,000 (though the News reported the number at $25,000). "It’s ridiculous . . . It’s outrageous," Nin's uncle Alcides Urena told the paper.
Still, a relative told the News that family members who spent time together at Nin's grandmother's house on Saturday were at least happy an arrest was made.
